Lake Union Events: Things to Do in August

There’s lots of fun happening in Lake Union this August! Check out some highlighted events…

Tuesdays in August: Pasta Class
6:30pm | Cuoco
Learn how to make pasta from scratch on Tuesdays in August at Cuoco, one of Tom Douglas’ fantastic restaurant creations. You’ll learn the tricks of technique, plus recipes and a hands-on demonstration. Then, sit down for a three course meal featuring the pasta you crafted in the kitchen. The cost is $65/person and includes a take-home portion of pasta and a glass of wine.

August 3: Living Voices Theatrical Performance – La Causa
2pm | MOHAI
MOHAI’s next installment of Living Voices, a live theatrical performance combined with film from archives, shares a closer look at the Mexican American farmworkers movement in the late 1960s. These workers struggled with indecent working conditions and racism while battling for their civil rights, and this performance focuses on one woman balancing her family while fighting to free her people from poverty. The cost is free with museum admission.

August 3: First Free Thursday at MOHAI
10am – 8pm | Museum of History and Industry
On the first Thursday of the month, August 3rd, the Museum of History and Industry offers free general admission for the museum’s permanent exhibits – all day long! The free admission includes: True Northwest: the Seattle Journey, and the Bezos Center for Innovation.

Saturdays in August: A Bite-Size History of Pike Place Market
1-1:30pm and 3-3:30pm | MOHAI
Learn more about one of the oldest continuously operated public markets in the US on Saturday, August 5th. MOHAI is hosting two 30-minute edible journeys on Saturdays this month, starting at 1 and 3 p.m., featuring six samples that illuminate a moment in Pike Place Market’s history. Member registration is required, and is first-come, first-served for non-members. The cost is $5.

August 5: Seattle Outdoor Cinema – “The Dark Knight”
6pm | SLU Discovery Center
The SLU Discovery Center’s outdoor movies continue on August 5th with a viewing of “The Dark Knight”. The movie will be screened in high-definition at the SLU Discovery Center’s grass lawn on a 55-foot inflatable screen. This event is 21+, with a beer garden.

August 11: SLU Block Party
12pm – 11pm | SLU Discovery Center
The annual South Lake Union Block Party is finally here! On August 11th, head to the Discovery Center with the whole family to shop more than 60 community booths from noon until 6 p.m. and enjoy the party! Food trucks and a beer garden will be going until 11 p.m., with live music performances sprinkled throughout the afternoon. The School of Visual Concepts’ Steamroller Smackdown is from 2 – 7 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 7:45.

August 11-13: Fred Hutch Obliteride
All Day | South Lake Union
The Fred Hutch Obliteride weekend is August 11th through 13th, with registration and a kickoff celebration on the 11th, and the rides kickoff on Saturday morning at 7 a.m. from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

August 12: Seattle Makers Market
11am – 5pm | 400 Fairview Avenue
Visit the ground floor of the Market Hall at 400 Fairview on Saturday, August 12th for the monthly Seattle Makers Market series! This free event features handmade goods from crafters, artists, makers and artisans in the Seattle area.

August 13: Lake Union 10K
7:30am | South Lake Union Park
The 9th annual Lake Union 10K is coming up on Sunday, August 13th. The race begins at 7:30 a.m. at Lake Union Park in the southwest corner of Lake Union. Enjoy vendors, raffles, awards, and Portage Bay Cafe’s French Toast and breakfast bar after the race.

August 19-23: Washington Beer Collaboration Festival
4:30pm | SLU Discovery Center
Taste from 25 different special collaboration beers crafted by 50 different Washington breweries at the Washington Beer Collaboration Festival from August 19th through 23rd. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door, and include 8 4-ounce tasting tokens and a tasting glass.

August 25: Pinknic on the Patio
4pm – 7pm | Cuoco
Cuoco is hosting a patio party on Friday, August 25th to feature the delicious pink wine of the summer: Rosé! The first ever Pinknic on the Patio Rosé Party will include snacks, summer music and plenty of rosé samples to enjoy. Wear pink and white! Tickets are $20 per person in advance, or $25 per person at the door and include five tastings and snacks.

August 26: Pre-Prohibition Whisky Cocktails
1pm – 3pm | Serafina
Participate in a fun, unique cocktail workshop and tasting event at Serafina this month! The Italian restaurant is hosting a Pre-Prohibition Whisky Cocktail event on Saturday, August 26th at 1 p.m. Learn about the history and tradition of finely crafted whisky, enlivened in well-mixed cocktails. A food pairing will be offered with each whisky cocktail. The cost is $80/person plus tax and gratuity.

August 31: Amazon Walking & Wine Tasting Tour
1pm – 3pm | The VUDE
Get the scoop on Amazon lore, history and facts while touring the glass Spheres, art installations, dog parks and Seattle’s only free banana stand on the Amazon Walking & Wine Tasting Tour! This 45-minute tour concludes with a wine tasting at The VUDE, tasting room for Hand of God Wines. Admission is $40/person, and includes the wine tasting.
